I have a ‘2000 diesel truck 4×4. As a member at Sam’s I bought a set of BF Goodrich’s. I told the tech that wanted the load range that the truck calls for, which is load range d or E. He seemed like he knew what he was talking about, telling me that he wouldn’t put any thing less than that anyway. You guessed it, after charging me the extra money for this load range, my truck was being serviced at the dealership, and I mentioned that I was getting some vibration in the front end. He immediatley told me that I had the wrong load range for this vehicle and that the tires are wearing much faster as the truck is too heavy for these tires. So I went back to the Sam’s where I purchased them. Of course the guy that sold them to me, is no longer there. Sam’s would only pro-rate the tires at such a rediculous price, I was offended at the offer. Not only that, but they said the only way to get any justice from them was to purchase the tires from them. And being that this load range tire has to come from the factory, it was going to take awhile for him to locate some. And then he goes on to tell me that I should have known that if they had those tires in stock, something was wrong. I told him that I wasn’t a tire geek, and that’s why we ask questions. I licked my wounds and called the guy a crook, so that I would feel better, and left and purchased tires from someone else.

Jeff Licquia writes of a lesson he learned after some problems with tires (thankfully resolved) he bought at Sam’s Club: Nevertheless, as a lesson hard won, it bears repeating: do not buy anything from club stores that you foresee needing…

I was a member of a couple of them for a while but, here in Michigan anyway, certain non-chain groups like Meier are competitive enough that the benefits of the pay-to-shop clubs seem pretty dubious.
